Mental Capacity Assessment Training: Principles and Practices

The mental capacity assessment helps to determine the person's ability to make a specific decision. This course for caregivers and mental health practitioners explains how to assess mental capacity. We begin with the definition of ‘mental capacity’ and go over the relevant UK legislation, the code of practice and the five core principles used to gauge mental capacity. We discuss how to make ‘best interest’ decisions and handle disagreements.

‘Mental capacity’ refers to a person's ability to make their own decisions. Did you know that a lack of mental capacity removes your freedom to make an independent decision? This mental health course for caregivers identifies the signs that a mental capacity assessment may be required. We then go over the main points covered in the UK’s Mental Capacity Act (MCA) of 2005 and explain how to implement it in daily life. We show you when to make an assessment and demonstrate how to conduct the test. We then examine the process of challenging a result.
The course provides a checklist of factors to guide ‘best interests’ decision-making to help guide those choices. We discuss when you should use the Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA) before explaining the least restrictive and ‘balance sheet’ principle in legal decision-making. We explore record-keeping and unpack the role of the chairperson in the ‘best interest’ meetings. The course lays out the lasting powers of attorney and explains the rules regarding Advance Decisions to Refuse Treatment (ADRTs). We discuss how the Mental Capacity Act protects professional caregivers and healthcare providers who follow its guidance.
Finally, the course identifies the criteria for using restraint to protect people’s best interests and explains how to protect them from ill treatment and neglect. We cover record-keeping and establish the importance of keeping information confidential to endure legal compliance and accuracy. We go over the roles and responsibilities of the Court of Protection, the deputies appointed by the court and the public guardian. Anyone who cares for a vulnerable adult can benefit from this course, which particularly suits nurses, social workers and caregivers. It is important that people like the elderly are protected from a lack of mental capacity so sign up to learn how to assess their mental health while preserving their dignity and wellbeing.
